Michael, on the tools

I’m a carpenter. Been on the tools about ten years.

One day I was working in a room that was fully tiled and completely empty, so every sound just bounced around the place. I had a couple of cuts to make on the drop saw, cutting a metal bar, and I’d left my earmuffs in the van. It was only a couple of cuts. Couldn’t be bothered walking out to get them. I thought, I’ll be right.

It was so loud and so high pitched that I stopped after two or three cuts. I remember thinking, no, I can’t do this. Packed up and went home.

I was going out that night, so I lay down for a nap first. As I was drifting off I heard this tearing sound in my ears. Thought, what the hell is that. Figured I’d wake up and it’d be gone.

Woke up the next day. Still there. That was the start of my tinnitus.

Since then my ears have been sensitive to everything. Going out, gigs, anywhere loud, it would flare up and get worse. So I started wearing foamies out clubbing. Then those bulky plugs that stick out of your head. Every night someone would ask what’s that in your ears. It was embarrassing.

So I made the earplugs I wanted. Small enough that nobody notices them. Clear enough that you can still hear your mates talking. Something you’d actually put in, on site or out at night, instead of leaving them in the van.

That’s Earvengers.
